Chapter Seven: Gluing and Binding

Gluing and binding the bamboo strips together is a critical step in the construction of your fly rod. This chapter will cover the selection of glue, binding techniques, and removing excess glue to ensure a strong, seamless bond.

Choosing the Right Glue

Selecting the appropriate glue is crucial for the durability and performance of your fly rod. Here are some popular choices:

  1. Epoxy Resin: Provides a strong, durable bond that is resistant to moisture.

  2. Polyurethane Glue: Expands slightly as it cures, filling any gaps and creating a robust bond.

  3. Resorcinol Glue: Known for its waterproof properties and strong bond, but it requires precise mixing and clamping.

Binding Techniques

Binding the bamboo strips together requires careful alignment and even pressure to ensure a seamless bond.

Dry Run

  • Assemble the Strips: Arrange the strips in the correct order and dry-fit them to ensure they align properly.

  • Mark the Strips: Use a pencil to mark the strips for proper alignment during gluing. Applying the Glue

  • Prepare the Glue: Mix the glue according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Apply Evenly: Use a small brush or spatula to apply a thin, even layer of glue to the mating surfaces of the strips.

  • Assemble Quickly: Once the glue is applied, assemble the strips promptly to avoid the glue setting prematurely.

Binding the Strips

  • Use Binding String: Starting at one end, wrap the binding string tightly around the strips, moving towards the other end. Maintain even tension throughout to ensure a uniform bond.

  • Binding Tape Alternative: Some rod makers use binding tape instead of string for a more uniform pressure application.

Curing

  • Clamp the Strips: Use clamps to hold the bound strips in place if necessary. Ensure the strips are straight and aligned correctly.

  • Allow to Cure: Let the glued and bound strips cure according to the glue manufacturer’s instructions, typically 24 hours.

Removing Excess Glue

After the glue has cured, it’s important to remove any excess to ensure a smooth finish.

Scraping

  • Use a Sharp Blade: Carefully scrape off any excess glue from the surface of the bamboo strips. Work slowly to avoid damaging the bamboo.

  • Fine Sanding: Follow up with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and remove any remaining glue residue.

Cleaning

  • Solvent Wipe: Use a solvent recommended by the glue manufacturer to clean any remaining residue from the bamboo strips
