Fall Fly Fishing Flies

When fly fishing in the fall, the cooler temperatures and changing conditions affect the types of flies that are most effective. Here’s a list of some of the best flies to use during the fall season:

1. Blue Winged Olive (BWO)

  • Pattern: Dry fly or emerger

  • Size: 16-22

  • Why it works: BWO hatches are common in the fall, especially on cloudy days. Trout often feed on these small mayflies, making them a go-to pattern.

2. October Caddis

  • Pattern: Dry fly or nymph

  • Size: 8-12

  • Why it works: These large caddis flies hatch in the fall and are a favorite of trout. Their size and visibility make them an effective choice.

3. Hare’s Ear Nymph

  • Pattern: Nymph

  • Size: 12-18

  • Why it works: The Hare’s Ear is a versatile fly that imitates a wide range of aquatic insects. In the fall, it works well as a general attractor pattern.

4. Pheasant Tail Nymph

  • Pattern: Nymph

  • Size: 14-20

  • Why it works: This nymph is an excellent imitator of mayfly nymphs, which are still active in the fall. It’s a reliable pattern for subsurface fishing.

5. Woolly Bugger

  • Pattern: Streamer

  • Size: 4-10

  • Why it works: As temperatures drop, trout become more aggressive and are willing to chase larger prey. The Woolly Bugger is versatile and can imitate baitfish, leeches, or large nymphs.

6. Egg Pattern

  • Pattern: Egg imitation

  • Size: 10-16

  • Why it works: In areas where salmon, steelhead, or brown trout spawn in the fall, egg patterns can be highly effective as other fish feed on the eggs.

7. Midges

  • Pattern: Dry fly, emerger, or nymph

  • Size: 18-24

  • Why it works: Midges are a year-round food source for trout, but they become especially important in the fall when other insect activity slows down.

8. San Juan Worm

  • Pattern: Worm imitation

  • Size: 10-14

  • Why it works: During the fall, rain can wash worms into rivers and streams, making the San Juan Worm an effective pattern, especially after a rainstorm.

9. Stonefly Nymph

  • Pattern: Nymph

  • Size: 8-12

  • Why it works: Stoneflies are active in the fall, and their large nymphs can be irresistible to trout preparing for the winter.

10. Soft Hackle

  • Pattern: Wet fly

  • Size: 12-18

  • Why it works: Soft hackles imitate emerging insects and can be particularly effective in the fall when fished in the surface film or just below.

Tips for Fall Fly Fishing:

  • Focus on slower waters: As temperatures cool, fish tend to move to slower, deeper water.

  • Match the hatch: Pay attention to the insects hatching on the water and adjust your fly selection accordingly.

  • Use a stealthy approach: With lower water levels in the fall, trout can be more wary, so approach the water carefully and use lighter tippet.

These flies should give you a solid arsenal for fly fishing in the fall, whether you’re targeting trout, steelhead, or other species.
