How to Tie a Futsu Kebari Fly: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Futsu Kebari is a classic Japanese tenkara fly known for its simplicity and effectiveness. This guide will walk you through the process of tying your own Futsu Kebari fly, perfect for tenkara fishing.

Materials Needed

  1. Hook: Size 10-16 barbless hook

  2. Thread: Black or any preferred color

  3. Hackle: Soft hen hackle, typically brown or gray

  4. Body Material: Peacock herl, dubbing, or floss

  5. Scissors

  6. Hackle pliers

  7. Whip finisher

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start the Thread:

  • Secure the hook in your vise. Attach the thread to the hook shank just behind the eye and wrap it back towards the bend of the hook, creating a solid base.

  1. Prepare the Hackle:

  • Select a soft hen hackle feather. Strip the fluff from the base of the feather to leave a clean stem for tying.

  1. Tie in the Hackle:

  • Tie in the hackle at the bend of the hook, ensuring the concave side faces forward towards the hook eye. This positioning will help create the distinctive look of the Futsu

  1. Wrap the Hackle:

  • Using hackle pliers, wrap the hackle forward in evenly spaced turns towards the hook eye. The hackle should stand out from the hook shank at a right angle, creating a full, bushy appearance.

  • Secure the hackle with a few wraps of thread near the hook eye and trim any excess stem.

  1. Create the Body:

  • Attach the body material (peacock herl, dubbing, or floss) just behind the hackle. Wrap the body material back towards the bend of the hook and then forward again to create a slightly tapered body. Secure with thread wraps and trim any excess.

  1. Form the Head:

  • Wrap the thread to create a neat head just behind the hook eye. This will help secure all the materials in place.

  1. Whip Finish:

  • Use a whip finisher to tie off the thread securely. Trim the thread close to the hook eye.

  1. Optional Step:

  • Apply a small drop of head cement to the thread wraps to ensure the fly's durability.

Tips for Tying Futsu Kebari

  • Hackle Selection: Choose a hackle that is soft and supple. This will help create the desired pulsating effect in the water, which attracts fish.

  • Body Material: Experiment with different body materials to see which works best in your local fishing waters. Peacock herl is a favorite for its natural iridescence.

  • Thread Control: Keep consistent thread tension to ensure a neat and durable fly.

The Futsu Kebari is an excellent addition to any tenkara angler's fly box. Its simple design and effective performance make it a favorite among traditional fly fishers. By following these steps, you can tie your own Futsu Kebari flies and enjoy the satisfaction of catching fish with a fly you made yourself.
