Step by Step Guide to Tying Caddisflies

Caddisflies are a must-have for any fly fisher. Follow these detailed steps to tie your own caddisfly:


Materials Needed:

  • Hook (size 12-18)

  • Thread (color to match the fly)

  • Dubbing material (for the body)

  • Elk or deer hair (for the wing)

  • Hackle feather (optional)

  • Whip finish tool

  • Scissors



Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Hook and Thread

  • Secure the hook in the vise.

  • Start the thread wrap from the hook eye to the bend.


2. Body

  • Apply dubbing material to the thread.

  • Wrap the dubbed thread around the hook shank to form a tapered body.


3. Wing

  • Cut a small bunch of elk or deer hair.

  • Align the tips and tie them on top of the hook shank, extending slightly past the body.


4. Head

  • Trim the butt ends of the hair.

  • Form a neat head with the thread.


5. Hackle (Optional)

  • If desired, tie in a hackle feather at the base of the wing.

  • Wrap it forward and secure it with thread.


6. Finish

  • Use a whip finish tool to secure the thread.

  • Trim any excess thread and apply head cement for durability.
